Differences Between Imported and Domestic Chip Mounters
Imported chip mounters currently account for over 80% of the market share, primarily due to their stability, high reliability, superior placement accuracy, fast speed, low failure rate, and ease of maintenance. Despite years of development, domestic chip mounters still fall short in terms of quality reliability and stability; their placement accuracy and speed are far from matching those of imported brands, and they also have poor value retention. Therefore, domestic chip mounters are mostly adopted by small-volume or simple-product SMT factories with low requirements for precision and speed.
Newness Level of Chip Mounters
There are numerous imported chip mounter brands, mainly dominated by European, American, and Japanese manufacturers, with prices varying by country of origin. Most brand-new imported chip mounters are relatively expensive, especially the three leading brands in the industry. If SMT manufacturers do not mind second-hand equipment, they can consider imported used chip mounters. Models of recent years with good appearance and working condition can meet production needs and perform almost as well as brand-new ones of the same model. The key is to conduct regular maintenance to maximize the machine's efficiency.
High-Speed vs. Universal Chip Mounters
Brands offer both high-speed and medium-speed chip mounter models, but some brands’ high-speed machines have poor quality and reputation, confining them to competing in the medium-speed segment. High-speed chip mounter brands widely recognized by the market include Siemens (acquired by ASM), Panasonic, and Fuji—the so-called "Big Three". This is analogous to the BBA in the automotive industry; although Honda and Toyota also have high-end models, BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz are generally regarded as the top premium brands by the market.
Market Penetration and Value Retention Rate
There are many brands and models of both imported and domestic chip mounters, some of which are very niche while others are highly popular. When selecting a chip mounter, it is necessary to consider both market penetration and value retention rate. High market penetration ensures better availability of spare parts and after-sales maintenance services. As a large-value fixed asset, the value retention rate of the chip mounter also needs to be weighed carefully.
Existing Chip Mounter Production Lines
If an SMT factory already has chip mounter production lines and plans to expand capacity, it can consider choosing the same brand of chip mounters and equipment. This eliminates the need for initial installation, commissioning, and technical training, as technicians are already familiar with the brand, saving the effort of relearning new equipment and minimizing production downtime to maximize profits.
In summary, the selection of a chip mounter should not be based solely on brand. Instead, it should be determined according to the factory’s production capacity, product types, and budget. For products requiring high reliability, complex circuit boards, and large, stable production volume, high-speed imported chip mounters are recommended for their superior stability.
